The first new service to be launched on the Inmarsat-4 satellites will be BGAN - the first mobile satellite service to deliver broadband data and voice, simultaneously through one device, to almost anywhere on the planet.

This unique innovation positions BGAN - which stands for Broadband Global Area Network - alongside the world's most advanced digital mobile services.

Based on IP technology, BGAN will deliver data rates of up to half a megabit. The service is accessed via a small, lightweight satellite terminal - about the size of a notebook PC - which is easy to carry, quick to set up and simple to use.

BGAN will enable users to remotely access corporate networks - using a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection - to send e-mails, transfer files and access the Internet, whilst making a telephone call at the same time.

With the successful launch of the first I-4 satellite, the service will be initially available across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia in late 2005.

The service is expected to launch in North and South America in Q2, 2006, after the successful launch of the second I-4.
